Constructie Sachs Komet, Sachs Jet, Shimano, Suntour en HistopThe hub with a coaster brake which is operated with a coupling cone on movement screw thread consists of the following main parts:

  • The hub with right-hand and left-hand cup, the spoke flanges and the inner casing on which both the brake jacket can engage as the coupling cone of the drive portion.
  • The brake lever with brake arm.
  • The brake shell.
  • The double wedge-shaped coupling cone.This is screwed onto the movement screw thread of the driver.
    When the drive head is running forward, the coupling cone is moving to the right and presses against the hub.
    The drive head and hub are then coupled.
    When the drive head rotates backward, the drive head moves to the left and press the brake shell out.
  • The drive head with movement screw thread.
  • The brake cone spring to prevent them turning the coupling cone.
    The spring connects the coupling cone with the shaft.
    As a result, the coupling cone will always shift on the thread as the drive head is running.
  • The sprocket
  • The shaft with the fixed right hand cone.
  • Locknuts and shaft nuts
  • Ball bearing.

  • The drive mode. The drive head runs forward. The coupling cone is restrained against rotation by the spring and thereby turns to the right. The inclined surface of the coupling cone is strongly pressed against the wedge-shaped coupling surface on the hub shell and forms a firm connection with the hub and drive head. The spring drags between the brake cone and axle or brake arm.
  • Freewheel mode. The drive head is stationary. The hub continues to rotate and turn the coupling cone left. This is separate from the hub shell, and remains stationary on the motion screw thread between the brake sleeve and coupling plane on the hub.
  • Brake. The drive head moves backward. The coupling cone is restrained from rotating by the spring. The coupling cone thereby moving to the left and presses with the inclined surface against the inclined surface of the brake jackets. Because the brake jackets also lie on the lever cone with slanted surfaces, they are pressed outwards against the hub shell.

The construction with wedge and motion screw thread has the advantage that they are constructively simpler due to the absence of the pawls. As with the Torpedo and Favorit hubs with coupling cone also need to be lubricated with a thin oil. Only the ball bearings should be lubricated with grease. Mounting is done in the same manner as in the Torpedo and Favorit

The brake jacket in the hub with a coaster brake is through brake arm coupled to the lower left-hand rear fork of the frame.
During braking, the brake arm pulls on the spot where it is attached to the chainstay.
Make sure the brake lever is taut and free of play clamped to the fork.
The brake lever must be mounted right under the chainstay.

If that is loose or improperly installed, the following can happen:

  • The brake arm and, possibly, lock nut rotate during braking with respect to the axis toward the front. This allows the states bearing to get looser.
  • The axle and brake arm rotate forwards relative to the axle. The right axle nut becomes loose or the right cone is loosened.
  • The axle and brake lever do not twist. The brake lever does not pull on the left chainstay. The braking torque is not transmitted through the lever, but through axle and axle nuts.
