The sizes of the wheel, rim and tire

The sizes of the wheel, rim and tire

The following four sizes are of importance for the bicycle wheel:

  • The outer diameter of the wheel
  • The nominal size of the rim and the tire
  • The width of the band
  • The installation width of the shaft

maten van het wielThe outer diameter of the wheel is required, in order to determine whether a wheel in the frame or the front fork can be put.
The outer diameter of the wheel is approximately the nominal size of the rim or tire plus two times the tire height.
The placing of a smaller or larger rim in the bicycle will not occur.
The use of a wider or narrower tire does occur. The maximum tire width that can be used is determined by the space that there is between the front or rear fork, the mudguard and the brakes.
Between all the components should be at least 2 mm of clearance when the tire is inflated hard.
For example, can be mounted a tire on a road bike, generally with a maximum width of 28 mm. A wider tire runs against the brake or fork

The nominal rim and tire diameter is the diameter of the bead wire of the tire and the diameter of the rim where the bead wire in comes to lie.
The nominal width of the tire is approximately the width of the tire in the inflated condition. The nominal width of the rim, the width of the rim where the bead wires come to lie. The dimensions are indicated in mm, wherein the width is the first given.
By using the bead as signature can be determined immediately whether a tire to fit a certain rim. So apply a tire with sizes 25-622 to a rim sizes 16-622 or 19-622.
They have both 622 mm as nominal diameter. The width of the rim is 16 or 19 mm, and the tire 25 mm.
There are tires of different widths that fit on a rim. What sizes that are, are specified by the manufacturer.
Manufacturers would feel himself obliged to indicate rim size and tire size according to the nominal size laid down by the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation (ETRTO).

Earlier tire sizes were usually marked with an inch size. But everyone still used frequently different size designations, which could arise confusion.
By turning this confusion the size designation of the ETRTO is in use. To convert old sizes to the new sizes are tables available.
The most common wheel and tire sizes are 622 (for race, urban and randonneurs cycling) and 559 (for mountain bikes and randonneurs).
In America on bikes are mounted tires with a diameter of 559. With the rise of the mountainbike in Europe, this size also becomes common in Europe and the size is also used for regular bikes and there are narrow tires with a nominal diameter of 559 available.
For children bicycles, folding and recumbent bikes are smaller wheel sizes used. Usually the wheel size is also given in inches. This can be confusing because the inch display can be specified multiple wheel sizes.
For example, may have a 20″ wheel in ETRTO five different sizes (406, 432, 438, 440, and 451).
The benefit of large wheels is that they have a lower rolling resistance, something more springs (the longer spokes are less stiff) and may take more bumps.
Small wheels are mainly used because they occupy less space.

The final size is of importance for the wheel is the installation width of the hub. When the fork is too narrow, the wheel can be mounted by bending out of the fork, or to replace the hub.
When the fork is too large, the wheel can be mounted by bending the fork narrower or by placing between washers (and possibly to be replaced by a longer axis).
The width should especially be adapted in order to be able to mount a free wheel, to expand the number of sprockets on the freewheel, or to assemble wider gear hub.
